It is our pleasure to invite you to the Athens launch of Code on the Road: Empowering Migrant Women and Girls Through Business Entrepreneurship Training to take place on Tuesday 18th June 2019 at 4.00pm at the ALBA Graduate Business School, Xenias 6, Athens.
Code on the Road is the winning initiative in Greece founded by Aya Burweila and her international team of dynamic women and men to empower native and migrant women and girls through software and business entrepreneurship training in both Athens and Amman. The program is supported by The Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund of the U.S. Department of State and it is the only winning program from Greece to win this year.

On behalf of my team and given your outstanding background in leadership, innovation and empowerment projects, we would be delighted and honored to have you join us on the occasion of our launch.

Since 2011, the wars in Syria and Libya have sparked a large-scale refugee crisis. In Greece, the total number of refugees is over 40,000 while in Jordan, there are over 1.5 million refugees who have fled conflict and strife. The integration of migrant women into the local job market is a crucial foundation that will have strong benefits not only for migrant women themselves, but also for their children, family members, and society at large. Despite this, migrant women face additional challenges in accessing both educational and employment opportunities in comparison with their local peers. At the same time, local authorities around the world struggle with the ICT skills gap and there is a shortage of women with software skills. Nonetheless, women consistently receive messages both implicit and explicit that computer science and entrepreneurship are not fields for them. Our solution, with our distinguished local partners such as FUNZI, the Melissa Network, Deree – The American College of Greece, iforU, Orange, Mataroa, Kalam Research & Media, Finn Church Aid, the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurial Excellence (CIEE) at Al-Hussein Technical University (HTU), Qasid Institute, and others, is to provide beneficiaries with a two-pronged and complementary solution: 1) FUNZI training courses in business entrepreneurship, and 2) Software and coding workshops to teach beneficiaries the basics of what they need to know in order to launch their virtual businesses. Our holistic program is accessible to both native and migrant women to further promote integration and equality.

Code on the Rode received one of the approximately 70 grants of the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF) for 2018.  The AEIF is an annual program of the U.S. Department of State. It provides small grants to teams of past and current participants of U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs to carry out public service projects using the skills and knowledge they gained during their exchange experiences.  Since it began in 2011, AEIF has supported more than 360 alumni-led initiatives around the world and reached millions of people both directly and indirectly through trainings, awareness campaigns, and leadership and empowerment programs.
